2024 Scorpo Pinot Gris Single Vineyard Estate Grown and bottled
Stelvin
ABV 13.5%
Sitting on a ridge of old volcanic red soils in Merricks North, most of the Scorpo Vineyard slopes gently to the north, whilst the main block of Pinot Gris sits on a cooler south-west facing slope at the back of the property. Yielding only a meagre 3.1 tonnes/ha in 2024 (1.25 tonnes/acre), the fruit was hand-picked in two batches 1 week apart (March 1st and March 8th), approximately a week ahead of average.
Each batch was gently whole bunch pressed, with the unclarified juice fermented in old French oak barriques, where it remained for just over 5 months on gross lees prior to racking and bottling in November. The slightly warmer than average vintage produced generous flavours in the Pinot Gris grapes, but this was tempered nicely by cool conditions in February, ensuring good retention of natural acid and aromas. The result is a lovely concoction of spicy apple and honey dew aromas and mouth-filling flavours, with a fruit density that keeps things centred and provides the foundation for a very serious Pinot Gris.
